BACKGROUND
Dr. Jean-Pierre A. Verbiest is a senior economist with over four decades of experience in Southeast Asia, specializing in macroeconomics, finance, and regional integration. He has worked extensively with ASEAN and the Mekong subregion, including leading the ASEAN 2030 long-term vision study for the Asian Development Bank Institute in Tokyo and advising on economic reforms, infrastructure development, and investment opportunities, particularly in Myanmar and the CLMV countries. He previously held senior positions at the Asian Development Bank in Manila, Viet Nam, and Thailand, and served with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) in Bangkok. Dr. Verbiest is Honorary Policy Advisor to the Mekong Institute and has published widely on regional cooperation and development issues. He also serves as Counsellor and Charge d’Affaires a.i. at the Embassy of the Sovereign Order of Malta to Thailand, representing the Order at high-level governmental and UNESCAP events. Dr. Verbiest holds a PhD in economics from the University of Oxford, as well as prior degrees in economics, finance, and econometrics.
