Understanding Uterine Fibroids

Uterine fibroids are common benign tumors affecting 20–30% of females aged 30–50, with a higher prevalence in certain groups such as married women without children, those who are overweight, and those with a family history of uterine fibroids. While generally not life-threatening, they can cause symptoms like heavy menstrual bleeding or irregularities, indicating the need for medical attention to prevent infertility or anemia. During pregnancy, they increase the risks of complications like premature birth and miscarriage. Early detection is crucial for effective management.

Types of Uterine Fibroids:

· Intramural Fibroids: These fibroids are the most common type that grow within the muscular uterine wall. They may cause symptoms such as pelvic pain and heavy menstrual bleeding.

· Subserosal Fibroids: These fibroids are found on the outside of the uterus, subserosal fibroids can lead to back pain and pelvic pressure due to their size and location.

· Submucosal Fibroids: Growing within the inner lining of the uterus, submucosal fibroids can cause menstrual disorders and fertility issues.

Symptoms of Uterine Fibroids

·       Pelvic pain or pressure

·       Heavy menstrual bleeding

·       Back pain

·       Frequent urination

·       Constipation

·       Difficulty emptying the bladder

Early detection through technology-assisted diagnosis, such as ultrasound, is crucial to prevent potential complications associated with uterine fibroids. Timely intervention allows for a more effective management plan and can alleviate symptoms, improving the overall quality of life.
